Role

As Managing Director of Acquisitions, Matt oversees the acquisition and research team across all stages of the investment process. He is responsible for sourcing immediate and future development sites as well as opportunistic investing in existing assets across all of Wayfinder’s markets.

Journey to Wayfinder

Prior to joining Wayfinder, Matt was VP of Investments for Artesia Real Estate, an Austin-based private equity real estate firm that he had started 8 years prior at as an intern while earning his degree at UT Austin.

At Artesia, Matt was responsible for investing activities nationally and across all product types. He oversaw and executed $608mm in real estate transactions across 130 deals and invested $224mm in capital across 33 properties on behalf of Artesia’s investors. These properties included 1,535 multifamily units, 510 hotel rooms, 140 acres of raw and covered urban infill land housing 1.52mm square feet of cash-flowing buildings (including retail, industrial assets to be redeveloped) and 240k square feet of adaptive re-use, creative office projects. These investments were located primarily in Austin, Salt Lake City, Denver, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, and Nashville, alongside the occasional adjacent market.

When Wayfinder was founded in 2019, Mac and Chris shared office space with Artesia at the white 2-story Victorian on San Marcos and East Cesar Chavez Street. It was during this time that Matt, Mac, and Chris got to see each other in action and their friendship grew – little did they know that a few years later in 2023, they’d have the opportunity to work together.

About Matt

While in college at UT Austin’s McCombs School of Business, Matt held internships at Hines and Legacy Trust Company in Houston and was a licensed Realtor at the 512 Group with Alan Ware, where he transacted on 70+ sales and leases in the campus-area student housing market.

Matt and his wife, Macey, live in Bee Cave with their daughter, Margot, and goldendoodle, Jax. Macey is also involved in the industry as the Controller at Timberline Real Estate Partners, an Austin-based private equity real estate company, making them wonderful dinner guests (as long as you don’t want to talk about anything else!).

Outside of work, Matt is heavily involved with mentoring students at UT Austin and is on the University’s Associate Council of the Real Estate Center.
